SUMMARY:Frontiers of Cosmology Lecture: The Surprising Expansion History of
  the Universe
DESCRIPTION:THE UCR CENTER FOR EXPERIMENTAL COSMOLOGY & INSTRUMENTATION PRE
 SENTS:\nFRONTIERS OF\nCOSMOLOGY LECTURE\nThe Surprising Expansion\nHistory
of the Universe\nIn 1929 Edwin Hubble discovered that our Universe is\nex
panding. Ninety years later\, the Space Telescope\nthat bears his name is
being used to study an even\nmore surprising phenomenon: that the expansio
n is\nspeeding up.\nThe origin of this effect is not known\, but is broadl
y\nattributed to a type of "dark energy" first posited to\nexist by Albert
Einstein and now dominating the mass\nenergy budget of the Universe.\nPro
fessor Riess will describe how his team discovered\nthe acceleration of th
e Universe and why\nunderstanding the nature of dark energy presents one\n
of the greatest remaining challenges in astrophysics\nand cosmology. He wi
ll also discuss recent evidence\nthat the Universe continues to defy our b
est efforts\nto predict its behavior.\nFeaturing introductory remarks by\n
UCR Provost Elizabeth Watkins and\nCNAS Dean Peter Atkinson\nThis event is
free and open to the\npublic. The local community\, and\nmiddle and high
 school students\, are\nstrongly encouraged to attend.\nSpecial Speaker:\nA
dam Riess\nBloomberg Distinguished Professor\nBarber Professor of Physics
and Astronomy\nJohns Hopkins University\n2011 Nobel Laureate in Physics
