on war and peace\, featuring Dona Nobis Pacem for chorus\, orchestra and s
oloists. The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams served as a stretcher bearer
in the British Royal Army Medical Corps during the WWI\, experiencing tha
t catastrophic war firsthand. Later\, in 1936\, as England faced fascism a
nd the threat of another war\, Vaughan Williams turned to the poetry of Am
erican poet Walt Whitman for his impassioned plea for peace. Walt Whitman
too had attended to gravely wounded soldiers\, as a volunteer nurse during
the American Civil War\, and wrote movingly about his experiences in the
"Drum Taps" section of his Leaves of Grass. Dona Nobis Pacem is a richly c
ompassionate work -- magnificent and ultimately hopeful. The UCR Chorale\,
Chamber Singers and Orchestra are joined by guest artists\, soprano Thali
a Moore and baritone Elliot Z. Levine. Also on the program: music by Tomm
y Sands from the Northern Ireland "troubles\," the beautiful Esti Dal by K
odaly\, and Janequin's famous La Guerre\, wittily imitating sounds of batt
le. And\, for orchestra\, movements from The Sea by English composer Frank
