SUMMARY:ECE Seminar Series: Dr. Mohammadreza Rezvani (UCR)
DESCRIPTION:Flyer: Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Modern Data Cent
ers\n\nAbstract: Data centers are becoming one of the most important compu
ting infrastructures of the modern economy\, but their rapid growth also b
rings major challenges in power consumption\, energy efficiency\, and grid
stability. These challenges are especially pronounced as artificial intel
ligence and machine learning workloads increase demand for high-performanc
e computing resources while power grids integrate more renewable energy so
urces. This talk will discuss power management in data centers from two co
mplementary perspectives: server-level efficiency and grid-level coordinat
ion. First\, I will describe how modern graphics processing unit data cent
ers can coordinate with the power grid to provide frequency regulation ser
vices\, reducing the need for fossil-fueled backup reserves and lowering g
rid-side carbon emissions. Second\, I will present recent work on responsi
ve\, low-overhead\, Quality of Service-aware dynamic power management for
data center workloads using extended Berkeley Packet Filter mechanisms in
the Linux kernel. Together\, these directions show how data centers can be
come not only more energy efficient\, but also more active participants in
building sustainable computing and energy systems.
