SUMMARY:Sip with a Scientist
DESCRIPTION:What’s the true cause of Alzheimer’s disease? Researchers h
ave followed hundreds of clues for decades\, reaching countless dead ends.
On Monday\, join UC Riverside chemistry professor Ryan Julian at Bar Ni M
odo on University Avenue at 5 p.m. as he reopens the cold case on this dev
astating disease. His evidence suggests the true culprit causing Alzheimer
’s is not simply from plaques forming in the brain\, as is widely believ
ed\, but that one key protein interferes with the normal job of another.\n
\n \n\nJulian holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Caltech and came to
UCR in 2005. Not initially intending to investigate Alzheimer's\, he disc
overed a way of identifying changes that occur in molecules due to aging\,
which eventually led to insights in age-related diseases themselves. Come
for the free appetizers\, stay as he unravels a mystery that’s been lon
 g in the making.
