About

UCR is Composing Tuesday, June 2, 2026 — 8:00 PM ARTS 166, UC Riverside Admission is free and open to the public. The UC Riverside Department of Music presents UCR is Composing, a concert celebrating new music created by UCR composition students. The program features a showcase of original works for violin and piano, written especially for this occasion and performed by the distinguished ensemble Duo Álma. Formed by violinist Lourdes Lobo and pianist Rubia Santos, Duo Álma is an internationally active chamber ensemble dedicated to both the classical repertoire and contemporary music. Since beginning their collaboration in 2017, the duo has performed widely across Latin America and has developed a reputation for championing new works and music by Latin American composers. Pianist Rubia Santos, a Brazilian-born artist based in Costa Rica, has performed internationally and has held teaching positions at universities in the United States, Germany, and Costa Rica. Her work often includes premieres and advocacy for new music from Brazilian and Latin American composers. Violinist Lourdes Lobo, originally from San José, Costa Rica, has been an active performer for more than fifteen years and previously performed with the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. Through Duo Álma, she has toured widely and collaborated on programs that connect the classical tradition with contemporary repertoire. In this special concert at UCR, the duo will present world premieres by UCR student composers, offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear emerging voices in contemporary composition interpreted by internationally experienced performers. The works explore a wide range of musical ideas—from lyrical chamber writing to experimental textures—reflecting the diversity of creative approaches cultivated within UCR’s composition program ADMISSION Free and open to the public. Though admission is free, a ticket is required. One ticket per person will be distributed at the venue one hour before the concert. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.
