Dona Nobis Pacem: UCR Chamber Singers, Chorale, and Orchestra
About
UCR Chamber Singers, Chorale, and Orchestra: Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem and more with guest artists Thalia Moore, soprano, and Elliot Z. Levine, baritone Saturday, May 30 @ 8 pm Sunday, May 31 @ 3 pm University Theatre Ruth Charloff, Director Music on war and peace, featuring Dona Nobis Pacem for chorus, orchestra and soloists. The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams served as a stretcher bearer in the British Royal Army Medical Corps during the WWI, experiencing that catastrophic war firsthand. Later, in 1936, as England faced fascism and the threat of another war, Vaughan Williams turned to the poetry of American poet Walt Whitman for his impassioned plea for peace. Walt Whitman too had attended to gravely wounded soldiers, as a volunteer nurse during the American Civil War, and wrote movingly about his experiences in the "Drum Taps" section of his Leaves of Grass. Dona Nobis Pacem is a richly compassionate work -- magnificent and ultimately hopeful. The UCR Chorale, Chamber Singers and Orchestra are joined by guest artists, soprano Thalia Moore and baritone Elliot Z. Levine. Also on the program: music by Tommy Sands from the Northern Ireland "troubles," the beautiful Esti Dal by Kodaly, and Janequin's famous La Guerre, wittily imitating sounds of battle. And, for orchestra, movements from The Sea by English composer Frank Bridge, a lush and gorgeous work from 1911.
